DVD: Good Luck Chuck

March 5, 2008

Charlie ‘Chuck’ Logan (Dane Cook) is a handsome, successful dentist. Successful in work, yes – but in love? No.

good-luck-chuck.jpgAs a kid, Charlie was hexed by a weird goth girl whose advances he rejected. The curse? Every girl he sleeps with will find true love with the next man she meets. Rumour spreads and Charlie finds himself inundated with women throwing themselves at him. Cue splitscreen sex scenes demonstrating most of the Kama Sutra… fun! He soon tires of all the meaningless shagging despite his best friend Stu (Dan Fogler), a tit-obsessed cosmetic surgeon, convincing him that he is providing a valuable service to womankind. Suddenly Charlie’s life is made all the more complicated when he meets the clumsy yet cute Cam (Jessica Alba) and falls for her hook, line and sinker. He knows that he has to reverse the curse or risk losing her forever.

Sadly there isn’t an ounce of chemistry between the leading characters. Cook, doesn’t have the charismatic attributes that you would expect from a leading man, while Alba – as beautiful as she is – just doesn’t t hit the spot. Her cute, ditzy persona mimics that of a hyperactive eight-year-old in desperate need of Ritalin. Meanwhile Fogler, a cut price Jack Black, is funny to begin with but his small amount of comedic talent soon becomes tiresome.

What is this film? A chick flick, a romcom or a full on gross-out? It’s hard to say. What is evident though is that the film has scenes and scenarios that meet the needs of all three genres. You may feel lost or confused while watching this film and for that you would be forgiven as the film never really takes a definite route of direction.

If you like loads of shots of tits, tons of fart jokes and copious amounts sexual innuendo, you might want to watch the DVD. Sure it delivers a handful of laughs but it’s let down by a poor cast who lack chemistry and a script that just doesn’t know what it wants to be.     Rachel Shaw
